There are basically two general types of grant programs for individuals. There are programs which offer direct payments to individuals, and others which indirectly benefit individuals by providing the the funding required to the desired service. Most grant programs indirectly benefit you, the individual.

For example, let's say you are at risk of losing your house or apartment because you do not have the funds for your next payment. If you meet the state eligibility requirements then the funding you need for next payment will be sent to your mortgage holder or landlord.

Now lets say that you have debt racked up on a few credit cards and need help paying them off. The government grants go to debt relief agencies which in turn work with you by providing counseling and or debt consolidation at no cost to you.

As you can see in these two examples, the funding goes to the person or organization offering the service. These are examples of indirect grant programs for individuals. The grants benefit you, but you do not see the money.
